Abstract
1,181,786. Biaxially stretching films. GEVAERT-AGFA N.V. 11 April, 1967 [5 May, 1966], No. 19887/66. Heading B5B. In the production of lay flat films of orientable organic polymers, such as polyethylene terephthalate, wherein the film is biaxially stretched, after the film has been stretched transversely, the margins of the film are heated to a temperature between the temperature at which it has been longitudinally stretched and the melting temperature of the polymer. The film may be heat-set after the heating of the film margins. The heating of the film margins may be effected in such a manner that the extent to which the film margins are heated is at a maximum at the outer edges of the film and decreases inwardly from the edges. As shown in Fig, 2, which is a cross-section of the zone in which the film margins are heated, an infra-red radiator 21 parallel with the film edge and extending along the length of the film is located at each side of the film 9. The radiator comprises a tubular elongate radiation source 22 which is heated electrically and a reflector 23, both located in a metal housing 24. Each housing 24 is provided at the side facing the film with an elongated slotlike mouth which is defined by the lips 25 and 26. The marginal portion of the film is caused to travel centrally between the lips. The temperature of the heater 22 may be about 120‹ C. and the passage of the film through the film margins heating zone causes the wrinkling of the film margins to disappear. This wrinkling of the margins occurs during the biaxial stretching of the film and is due to the marginal portions of the film having become more elongated than the remainder of the film. The difficulty which is otherwise apt to occur in the heat-setting zone due to the jaws of the film margin grippers in the heat setting zone not opening widely enough to receive puckered or wrinkled film margins is thereby obviated. The proper winding up of the film on storage rolls is also facilitated.
