Abstract
1,259,930. Irradiation apparatus. PPG INDUSTRIES Inc. 14 Aug., 1970 [18 Aug., 1969], No. 39184/70. Heading H5R. Apparatus for treating products-e.g. coatings-with ionizing radiation in a controlled atmosphere, includes a chamber having inlet and outlet openings for the passage of a workpiece therethrough; a radiation permeable window positioned over a portion of the path of travel of the workpiece; a foraminous panel within the chamber defining a reservoir with the chamber wall; and means for introducing gas into the reservoir, as shown, the stainless steel or glass chamber 1 has projecting inlet and outlet openings 3, 3<SP>1</SP> in opposite side walls for a material 4 to be treated, on aluminium window (Figs. 1 and 3, not shown) in the upper wall, and foraminous panels 8, 8<SP>1</SP> adjacent the two end walls, with gas inlet pipes 5, 5<SP>1</SP> and manifolds 6, 61 for the introduction of gas into the reservoirs 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, the gas flow and relative dimensions being such as to provide laminar flow in the inner chamber defined by the panels, and the flow lines being as in Fig. 4. As described, a high energy electron beam is directed through the window, which may also constitute the window of the electron accelerator, and the gas is either nitrogen, or an oxygen/nitrogen mixture. The apparatus may further include power driven rollers for the transport of the workpiece, coolant fluid coils or reservoirs, and provision for introducing gas at the inlet and outlet 3, 3<SP>1</SP> e.g. distribution tubes extending along the openings and directing the gas down at about 45 degrees. The apparatus may be provided with a plurality of radiation permeable windows, to permit its use with a corresponding plurality of radiation sources. Numerical data on dimensions and gas flow are given.
