Abstract

1,259,583. Cartons. PACKAGING INDUSTRIES Inc. 8 Jan., 1970 [8 Jan., 1969], No. 1033/70. Heading B8P. [Also in Division E2] The lid 12 and bottom portion 13 of an egg carton are releasably fastened together by at least one catch 21 each of which is formed interiorly of the carton so that no projecting flaps etc., project beyond the edges of the closed carton. Each of the three catches shown comprises a protrusion 25, which is moulded in the bottom portion between a pair of egg cells 14 and which extends above, and interiorly of, an outer edge 24 and provides a hook 22, and a cooperating rounded detent 23 which extends inwardly from an expanded portion 27 of a side wall 16 of the lid 12. As shown, the lid 12 is hinged to the bottom portion at 18, or, it may be a separate item, in which case catches 21 are preferably formed in the sides of the carton. The lid 12 has a strengthening rib 31 which may have projections (33), Fig. 8 (not shown), which fit into depressions (32) in the top of each vertical post 30 formed between each cluster of cells 14. The carton is thermoformed from foamed polystyrene or other suitable mouldable material, openings 26 along the edges 24, 28 permitting air circulation and limited viewing of contents. The wall 16 of the lid 12 has indentations 29 to facilitate the gripping of the lid for pulling the portions 12, 13 apart, heat staking 26 between the edges being provided if desired.
