Abstract
1,259,222. Welding by pressure and fusion. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 June, 1970 [22 July, 1969], No. 36832/69. Heading B3R. [Also in Division C7] Uniformly distributed A1 studs 2 are each friction welded at one end 3 to a steel plate 1 and rigidly connected at the other end, e.g. by friction or fusion welding, to a plate 4 of higher electrical conductivity than the steel plate (such as A1, Cu or A1 alloy) to secure the plates in parallel relationship and provide a base plate assembly for an electrolytic cell having a flowing mercury cathode (see Division C7). To make the assembly shown in Fig. 3, the A1 studs are friction welded to steel plate 1 and abutted against A1 plate 4 having holes in register with, but of smaller diameter than, the studs 2. A1 studs 6 of the same diameter as studs 2 are spun under increasing pressure against the opposite side of plate 4 to make a friction weld 7. In a modification of this method, tapered A1 studs 24, Fig. 8, secured by friction welding to a steel plate (not shown) protrude through tapered apertures in an A1 plate 23. A1 studs 25 are spun against the protruding ends and adjacent areas of the A1 plate to produce friction welds. In a further embodiment A1 studs 8, Fig. 4, secured by welding to a steel plate 1, are passed through apertures of the same diameter in an A1 plate 4 and secured by fusion welding 9, e.g. by argon arc welding.
