Abstract

1,259,053. Polymer compositions. ESB Inc. 13 April, 1970, No. 17458/70. Heading C3P. [Also in Division H1] A battery separator in the form of a film comprises 10-30% by weight of an elastomeric resin binder blended with a gelling agent, at least 50% by weight of the binder being a vinylacetate-ethylene copolymer, the binder and agent being blended in such a manner that the gelling agent does not gel until contacted by the aqueous electrolyte. Suitable binders include polyethylene, vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymers, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers, natural and synthetic rubber. Suitable gelling agents which absorb electrolyte include starch, flour, carboxymethyl-cellulose, methyl cellulose, polyacrylamide resins, gums such as gum arabic and inorganic gelling agents such as silica gels. Examples relate to the use of ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with starch and flour. The binder and gelling agent are preferably dry blended and formed into films by roller milling. The film may be either self-supporting or applied to a paper backing. The resin forms a continuous matrix for the gelling agent and the gelling agent swells when it absorbs the battery electrolyte.
