Abstract
1,259,051. Laminated battery separator. ESB Inc. 13 April, 1970, No. 17456/70. Head. ing B5N. [Also in Divisions C3 and H1] A laminated sheet for use as a battery separator comprises a semi-permeable membrane barrier material laminated to an absorbent sheet material consisting essentially of 10-30% by weight of a vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer resin binder blended with a gelling agent. The semi-permeable layer preferably has a micropore size ranging from 5 to 50 Angstroms and is preferably made of "Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark). Other suitable microporous materials for this layer are polyamide, polyester, polyolefin, polyvinyl chloride and acetate, and polyacrylate. The gelling agent may be selected from starch, flour, methyl and carboxymethyl cellulose, polyacrylamide resins, natural gums such as gum arabic, inorganic gelling agents such as silica gel and admixtures thereof. The two layers may be laminated using gum arabic as adhesive, or one or both layers may be treated with a solution to tackify the layer(s) after which they are laminated together. Alternatively the separator may be prepared by dissolving the vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer in a solvent such as trichloroethylene and then adding the gelling agent such as wheat flour/ corn starch mixture. The viscous liquid formed after mixing is cast on a wetted "Cellophane" sheet by feeding it through an aperture or extrusion die. The laminated sheet is then heated to evaporate the solvent and water and is then calendered to a thickness of 4 to 18 mils using a 1 to 3 mil "Cellophane" sheet.
