Abstract

1,258,894. Removing oil from the sea. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 27 Jan., 1969 [19 Jan., 1968], No. 3043/68. Heading B7A. [Also in Division F4] A floating incinerator 1 for use in disposing of an oil slick 2 on the surface of the sea, comprises a combustion chamber 3 spaced from a submerged housing 6 by separator plates 5, a rotatable shaft 11 located in spiders 10 and 12, propellers 13 and 14 connected to the top and bottom of said shaft, and dispersing means 15 for throwing droplets of oil into the combustion space. In operation, starter fuel mounted on hooks 16 is ignited, causing the air that enters the chamber 3 between the plates 5 close to the surface of the water to rotate the propellers 13 and hence the shaft 11. Rotation of the shaft 11 causes the dispersing means 15 to throw oil from a pool 18 in the slick 2 into the lower portion of the combustion space where the burning starter fuel immediately ignites it. The propeller 14 on the shaft 11 forces water through the plates 5 beneath the slick so forming and continually replenishing the said pool 18. A plate 17 of density between the density of oil and water is mounted round the shaft 11 to float at the meniscus between the two liquids to help concentrate the oil within the reach of the dispersing means 15. The incinerator is kept afloat by means attached to arms 8 and stays 9.
