An arrangement for introducing samples into liquid chromatography column 20 from either open sample containers 1 mounted on transportation table 2' or reservoir 27 comprises an eluent pump 4 which (with valves 8, 11 and 13 in the positions shown) passes eluent through lines 5, 10 , 12 and 14 to and through body 2 which is of the same general configuration as container 1, and thence by line 16 to column 20. The sample in container 1 is eluted therefrom to column 20 by bringing the container 1 to the position shown by body 2, and switching two-way valve 11 to its alternative (broken line) position, whereby eluent is pumped by lines 5, 21 and 22, and thence through container 1. In this way, a large number of samples in containers 1 mounted on table 2' may be automatically and successively introduced to the column. While this is proceeding, a further sample from reservoir 27 is drawn through valve 13 into sample loop 23 by means of pump 26. When the sample containers on table 2' require to be replenished, column 20 is flushed with eluent directly by switching valve 8 to its alternative (broken line) position. Then, with body 2 in place and valves 8 and 11 in the positions shown (unbroken lines), valve 13 is switched to its broken line position, whereby eluent from reservoir 4 is pumped by lines 5 and 12, through loop 23 and lines 14, 15 and 16 to column 20, thereby introducing the sample in loop 23. By providing such alternative sampling means, the arrangement may be operated without a break while containers 1 are replenished. In an alternative embodiment (see Fig. 2, not shown), the use of valves 8 and 11 is avoided by the use of a body 2 having two separate channels passing therethrough.
