Abstract

1,178,382. Transferring samples; chromatography. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 13 Dec., 1966] 25 March, 1966], No. 13440/66. Heading B1X. Apparatus for automatically loading samples on to an analysis apparatus, for example a chromatography column, comprises a transfer member 1 which may be in the form of a rectangular block longitudinally slidable on guide rails 3, a plurality of apertures 6 extending through the transfer member for receiving sample containers 2, means such as a bed of ion exchange resin 9 in each container 2 for retaining sample prior to passing it to the analysis apparatus, a fluid flow assembly comprising inlet duct 4 and outlet duct 5 simultaneously registerable with respective ends of a given aperture, and means for providing relative movement between the fluid flow assembly and the transfer member so that the inlet and outlet ducts register with each aperture in turn. In the embodiment shown, a driven shaft 16 carries two discs 18, one on each side of the transfer member I, and a projecting peg 20 on each disc engages grooves 11 along the upper edge of member 1 to move member 1 in a step-wise manner to bring each sample container in turn under the inlet duct. Shaft 16 also carries a cam 19 which in one position clamps the inlet duct, transfer member and outlet duct together. (Fig. 2 not shown).
