Abstract

1,258,551. Article-separating packages for pairs of flat articles. PRATT MFG. CORP. 1 Jan., 1970, No. 115/70. Heading B8C. In a method of making a package having top and bottom panels 20, 21 and an intermediate panel 22 formed of heat sealable film and which accommodates one, or more, flat articles such as surgical sponges 24, 25 on each side of the intermediate panel 22 a first web, e.g. of bleached Kraft paper to provide the panels 20, 21, is continuously fed longitudinally and a strip, e.g. of polypropylene, or polyethylene, film to form the intermediate panel 22, is heat sealed at 27 to the first web and then folded partially upwardly, to receive the sponges 24, 25, Fig. 4, before being finally brought together and heat sealed along the outlines 23, 23<SP>1</SP> to form the finished package. When packaging surgical sponges the panels 20, 21 must have a porosity which permits steam sterilization while preventing entry of contaminated matter. In an alternative method the intermediate panel 22 is initially applied on edge normal to the first sheet 20, 21 which is then folded upwardly around that intermediate panel edge and heat sealed and trimmed at the edge. The remainder of the steps for forming the package are then carried out as described with reference to Figs. 1, 3 and 4. Short transverse seals 30 prevent the lower portion of the package from being ripped open while the items 24, 25 are being removed.
