Abstract
125,780. Moore, W. G. April 30, 1918. Spring devices.-Consists in providing the front wheel of a motor-cycle with a steering-head approximately equal in length to the wheel fork and having an upper bearing mounted in a yoke frame adjacent to the rim and a lower bearing carried by a rearward extension of the barrel-shaped axle, the steering mechanism and other parts being appropriately modified. The barrel-shaped axle comprises lateral sections 2, Fig. 6, secured to a central section 10 having a rearward extension carrying the lower steering-head bearing 15 alined with the upper steering-head bearing 25, Fig. 4. The lower bearing is mounted on the rearward extension 29 of an arc-shaped member 27 passing through the hollow axle and connecting the lower ends of a frame 28, Fig. 5, carrying at its upper end the bearings 25. The frame 28 slides in sleeves 30 integral with the vehicle frame 32, Fig. 1, and resiliently supported by springs 34. The steering-post 50 has its lower end mounted in a bearing 52 and is connected by an arm 59 and swivelling joint 56 to a yoke 53 pivotally connected to the upper end of the wheel fork 20. The upper part of the steering-mechanism may be enclosed in a sheet-metal casing 64. In a modification the steering post and fork are connected by a series of crown plate extensions provided with a universal joint, and the springs are in front of, instead of behind, the guiding- sleeves.
