Apparatus for sealing a cover B to a flanged container A comprises a support C having an aperture to receive the container and a heated die C<SP>1</SP> having a projecting rim b<SP>1</SP> to press the cover on to the flange and to heat seal it to the container, either the support or the die carrying a resilient ring which allows the flange or the cover to be deformed to accommodate any uneveness in the flange to provide intimate contact between the flange and the cover around the whole of the flange. In the construction shown, the ring c is disposed in a recess in the support and it is made of nitrile or silicone rubber; with this arrangement it is the flange which is deformed. In an alternative arrangement the die is provided with a groove which houses a coil spring the spring allowing the edge portion of the cover to be deformed.
