Abstract

1,257,636. Container handle applicator. NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORP. 4 Nov., 1968 [28 Dec., 1967], No. 52139/68. Heading B8D. [Also in Division A4] Two axially-aligned pins 60 are mounted one on each side of the neck of a container, for co-operation with apertures bored in the two ends of a bail-type plastics handle 61, the apertures being forced over the enlarged heads of the pins. Apparatus for force-fitting the handle comprises a U-shaped, adjustable retaining bracket 16 mounted on a rigid sheet metal base 10, the base also supporting two brackets 25 which each bear at their upper end a plate 30. An air-operated, double-acting ram 33 is mounted on each plate and has a cylindrical, stainless steel bored tip 42, which can be aligned with the pins on the restrained container and with the interposed handle ends, by vertical adjustment of the plate 30. A footoperated switch (55), (Fig. 1, not reproduced), activates a solenoid-actuated distributing valve (50), (Figs. 4, 5, not reproduced), located inside the base 10, to produce axial movement of the tips 42 via the rams 33 and air lines 38, 39. This movement presses the handle apertures over the pin heads, which pass inside the bore (43), (Figs. 7-9, not reproduced), of the tips 42. The end of each pin head is tapered to aid passage through the handle aperture; the handle and container may be produced from polyethylene or polypropylene.
