Abstract

[Also in Division B3] A portable press, e.g. for compressing connectors on to electric conductors, comprises a ram 5 (Fig. 1) pivotally connected to the ends of a pair of driving arms 9 the other ends of which are pivotally connected to two connecting elements 11, 15 movable in opposite directions and transverse to the ram movement by a pneumatic piston and cylinder unit 16, a control member 25 connected to an air supply valve 24 and adapted to project into the path of the connecting elements 11, 15 or the driving arms 9 so as to move the valve to its venting position when the ram 5 reaches its full compressing position. By operating a trigger 26 valve 24 is raised to open it and air is admitted through lines 35, 29 to the left-hand' end of cylinder 17. The cylinder 17 and connecting element 11 move to the left, and the piston 18 and element 15 to the right, thereby raising the ram 5 and a tool 4<SP>1</SP> carried thereon. Fig. 3 shows a modification having two cylinder-and-piston units 116, 116<SP>1</SP> having pistons 118, 118<SP>1</SP> whose piston-rods 115, 115<SP>1</SP> are pivotally connected to driving arms 109. The trigger for operating the air supply valve is covered by a spring closed pivoted safety cap 140.
