Abstract

1,256,912. Explosive forming. DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR. 28 Jan., 1970 [30 Jan., 1969; 18 June, 1969], No. 5183/69. Heading B3Q. [Also in Division F3] A method of deforming a tin plate base of a water tank to correspond with embossings on supporting metal blocks comprises dipping an open end of a detonating device beneath the surface of water in the tank and detonating the device. The detonating device comprises a tube, closed at one end, containing a mixture of PETN and carbon fibres, a charge of PETN alone and finally a brass disc. - The device is held vertically with its open end dipping beneath the surface of the water, with a space remaining between the end of the explosive charge and the water. The explosive charge, on ignition, is impelled against the barrier of water before it is completely burnt and the impact produces a compression wave which travels back through the explosive charge enabling it to detonate. The detonation shock wave is transmitted through the water to the bottom of the tank.
