Abstract
1,256,737. Tris-(hydroxymethyl) nitromethane. COMMERCIAL SOLVENTS CORP. 13 March, 1969 [13 March, 1968], No. 13353/69. Heading C2C. Tris-(hydroxymethyl) nitromethane is produced in a continuous process by passing nitromethane and formaldehyde in a molar ratio of 1: 3, together with an alkaline catalyst and, if necessary, water, to form an aqueous reaction mixture in a reaction zone, the amount of catalyst being sufficient to maintain the pH of the mixture at 7À8-8À3, and maintaining the temperature between 50‹ and 65‹ C. during the residence time in the zone of from 8 to 12 minutes. The aqueous solution of tris-(hydroxymethyl) nitromethane thus obtained is then removed from the reaction zone and may be then reduced to give tris-(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane. Specified alkaline catalysts are hydroxides and carbonates of sodium and potassium, hydroxides and oxides of calcium and barium, and organic tertiary amines, particularly trimethylamine, and the inorganic catalysts are subsequently removed from the reaction mixture, e.g. by absorption on an ionexchange column or by precipitation. Tertiary amines may be separated, e.g., by distillation, at a later stage, e.g. after reduction. The formaldehyde may be supplied in gaseous or aqueous phase or as paraformaldehyde.
