In a passenger conveyer having an initial accelerated zone (Fig. 1A) and a terminal decelerated zone (Fig. 1C), gradually variable speed in the zones is obtained by elongating and shortening the passenger-supporting surface which is constituted by the upper surfaces of plates 1, the latter being at all times partially superimposed, one upon another adjacent one, the elongation and shortening of the surface being effected by sliding adjacent plates relative to one another. Each plate 1 has pivots 7a, 7b at each side which are each connected to a pivot point of a respective parallel linkage 6a, 8a, 10a, 11a (Fig. 2). The remaining (upper and lower) pivot points of the linkage carry rollers which run in upper and lower guide channel members 17a, 16a, provided in the initial and terminal zones. The channel members diverge or converge in the direction of conveyance to provide the relative sliding of the plates. At the zone (Fig. B) between the initial and terminal zones, the parallel linkages are held in their extreme positions (corresponding to maximum spacing of the pivots of the plates 1) by recesses 21 in a drive belt 3 engaging the pivots 7a, 7b. A handrail 24 is supplemented by a system of handles or grips 25. Each platform may be of ribbed formation and may have an anti-slip surface (Fig. 6, not shown). In a modification (Figs. 3-5, not shown) the parallel linkages are disposed in a horizontal plane beneath the platforms.
