Abstract
1,256,180. Phosphorus-containing biphenyl and phenanthrene derivatives. SANKO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 31 Dec., 1969, No. 63532/69. Heading C2P. The invention comprises compounds of the Formulµ I to VI where X is halogen, hydroxyl, amino, C 1-22 alkyl, alkoxy or alkylthio, aryloxy (which may be substituted by phenyl or halogen) or arylthio, Y 1 and Y 2 may be the same or different and are halogen, C 1-18 alkyl, aryl, alkoxy or aryloxy, C 2-18 acyl, nitro, cyano or sulphonic acid, or Y 1 and Y 2 may form a phenanthrene compound with the biphenyl ring system, Z is oxygen, sulphur or two halogen atoms, m and n are 0-4 and p and q are 0-3, and salts of those compounds containing OH bonded to phosphorus, or containing sulphonic acid groups. The compounds of the invention may be prepared by heat-condensation of one or more compounds of Formula VII with a compound of Formula VIII where X 1, X 2 and X 3, which are the same or different, are halogen or aryloxy and subsequent optional further reaction such as ester interchange or hydrolysis. The compounds are used as antioxidants for polymers, and as insecticides fungicides and flame-retardants.
