Abstract

1429699 Phosphite esters containing oxetane groups BAYER AG 13 Nov 1973 [14 Nov 1972 9 March 1973] 52590/73 Heading C2P [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises phosphites of the general formula wherein n 1 is an integer, e.g. 1 to 9, n 2 is 0 or an integer, e.g. 1 or 2, n 3 is an integer, e.g. 1 to 9, at least one of the groups R is an oxetane group having the structure: wherein Z is H, alkyl, alkoxy, aralkyl, alkoxyalkyl or aryloxyalkyl, or at least one R is a hydrocarbon radical (e.g. CH 2 ) carrying an oxetane group as defined above, and any remaining R groups are selected from alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, optionally substituted aryl and heterocyclic groups, or two remaining groups R together with the phosphorus atom to which they are both linked form a heterocyclic ring and the group or groups Ar are the same or different and are at least divalent aromatic groups the free valencies of which are directly linked to the aromatic nuclei. Preferred compounds are those in which Ar corresponds to the radical: wherein R 1 and R 2 are selected from H, alkyl and alkenyl radicals having up to 18 carbon atoms, C 3 -C 6 cycloalkyl groups and C 6 -C 18 aryl groups and the other radicals (R 3 to R 6 <SP>1</SP>) are selected from H, C 1 -C 18 alkyl, C 3 -C 6 cycloalkyl, C 6 -C 18 aryl, aryloxy groups having up to 18 carbon atoms and halogen atoms, e.g. Cl or Br. The products may be obtained by either (a) reacting triphenyl phosphite, one or more hydroxy compounds containing a group R and one or more at least dihydric phenols (to provide the group or groups Ar), either in succession or simultaneously, in the presence of a basic catalyst, using appropriate molar proportions of the reactants, or (b) by reacting an at least dihydric phenol with PCl 3 and either simultaneously or subsequently with at least one alcohol or phenol containing the group or groups R (to provide the groups R) in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of a hydrogen chloride acceptor. The processes (a) or (b) can be carried out in a solvent, e.g. CHCl 3 , CCl 4 or toluene. The products are useful as stabilizers for polycarbonates based on at least one aromatic dihydroxy compound.
