Abstract
1,256,133. Eddy current brakes. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP. Ltd. 26 June, 1970 [30 June, 1969], No. 32942/69. Heading H2A. An eddy current damping device e.g. for a gyroscope, comprises a permanent magnet rotor 10 with toothed polepieces 11 surrounded by a cylindrical, non-magnetic, conductive stator 14 having teeth formed by soft-iron bars 13 embedded therein. Relative angular movement between the stator and rotor produces eddy currents in the stator which give rise to an opposing torque and to increase the eddy currents, half the teeth on each polepiece 11 are phase-shifted by half a tooth pitch as shown in Fig. 3a so that when the teeth in Band I of a pole-piece are in register with the stator teeth 13, those in Band II are out of register therewith. Consequently for a given rate of displacement of the rotor, the major phase axis oscillates about the polar axis of the magnet as the bands of rotor teeth come into register with the teeth 13 so that the rate at which the lines of flux cut the damping member is higher than said given rate. The stator teeth may be formed as the polepieces of the permanent magnet or, alternatively, the stator and permanent magnet in Fig. 1 may be stationary and only the rotor teeth movable in the air gap.
