Abstract
1,256,007. Chromatographic separation of stereoisomers. ORDENA LENINA INSTITUT ELEMENTOORGANICHESKIKH SOEDINENY AKADEMII NAUK SSSR. 1 July, 1969 [1 July, 1968], No. 33135/69. Heading B1X. [Also in Division C3] Mixtures of stereoisomers, e.g. racemic mixtures, which form a complex with a transition metal ion are chromatographically separated using an optically active asymmetric sorbent in the form of a complex with the same transition metal ion. The sorbent is preferably the product obtained by treating a cross-linked chloromethylated styrene copolymer with an optically active α- or #-aminocarboxylic or -aminophosphonic acid or an amide or ester thereof and then introducing a copper or nickel ion (see Division C3), but may also be the product obtained by reacting formaldehyde with tyrosine or a derivative thereof, or be a derivative of chitosan or alginic acid. The process is particularly applicable to the separation of amino acid mixtures using water and/or ammonia as eluent, and is preferably carried out by passing the eluate containing the eluted material in the form of a metal complex through a further column of the same sorbent which is not in the form of a metal complex, whereby the metal ion is removed from the separated material. Alternatively, the sorbent in complex form may comprise the centre portion of a single bed, the upper and lower portions consisting of uncomplexed sorbent, successive runs being performed in opposite directions to ensure that the metal ion is not removed from the column and remains generally in the centre of the bed.
