Abstract
The eluent for the electrodialyzer (10) has a higher saline concentration than the sugar liquor to be purified and is charged with a solute for conferring accrued viscosity so that its conductivity is of the same order of magnitude as that of the sugar liquor. Preferably, the solute is a by-product of sugar manufacture, namely, molasses. Prior to undergoing electrodialysis the sugar liquor is passed through the columns (7a, 7b) of an anionic exchanger (7) in order to replace its large anions for smaller anions, having a molecular weight less than about 50, such as chloride ions. The columns of the ion exchanger may be recharged with chloride ions by washing it with eluate resulting from electrodialysis.
