Abstract

1,255,978. Fuel elements. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 6 Oct., 1969 [10 Oct., 1968], No. 48949/69. Heading G6C. For use with a nuclear reactor fuel assembly including a plurality of fuel elements and a plurality of axially-spaced fuel element spacers, a retainer for maintaining the spacers in axial position comprises an elongated tube 21 adapted to pass through aligned passages in the spacers 16, and a plurality of radially extending lugs 26 fixed to the tube 21 each at the axial position of a respective one of the spacers 16 for engaging and preventing axial displacement of the latter. The tube 21 is of stainless steel or zirconium and forms the cladding for a column of nuclear fuel 22 such as U or Pu (typically in the form of an oxide). The fuel is maintained in position by a resilient cup-shaped retainer 24 above which is a plenum 23 for the collection of fission product gases. The spacers are formed of upper and lower cross-laced divider bars 32(1), 32(2), 33(1) and 33(2). (Bars 32(2) and 33(2) are situated below bars 32(1) and 33(1) and are not shown in Fig. 4). A spring member 34 exerts a lateral force on the tube 21 to force it into engagement with a a pair of rigid members 36, 37. The tube 21 is inserted into the spacer 16 with the lugs 26 extending along diagonals of the spacer passages, and then rotated 45 degrees to bring the lugs 26 between the upper and lower divider bars 33(1), 33(2). To prevent further rotation of the tube 21, its lower end plug 18<SP>1</SP> is formed with an extension 38 of square cross-section. With the spacers 16 captured by the lugs 26, the tube 21 and spacers 16 are moved downwardly to insert the extension 38 into a mating cavity in the lower tie plate of the fuel assembly.
