Abstract

879,903. Nuclear fuel elements. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 28, 1959 [May 9, 1958], No. 14907/58. Class 39(4). A fuel element 21 is supported within a replaceable graphite sleeve 5 as disclosed in Specification 791,011, by a beam comprising telescoping members 26, 27. The beam together with a boss 31 mounted on the beam member 26 is secured in the sleeve by aligning it with recesses 8, 9 and then expanding it so that the beam ends enter the recesses. The fuel element is then lowered so that a spigot 30 on the end cap 23 passes through holes in the boss 31 and members 26, 27, a retaining member 32 being finally secured to the spigot. The tubular uranium element 21 is closed by a zirconium alloy plug 24 and a sintered alumina spacer 25 spaces the plug from the end cap 23. In a modified construction (Fig. 1, not shown) the spigot does not pass through holes in the telescoping members and these members are maintained in their expanded condition by an indentation formed in the outer member which frictionally engages the inner member.
