803,708. Nuclear reactor control rods. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Dec. 31, 1956 [Dec. 30, 1955], No. 37523/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). The neutron absorbing control elements of a nuclear reactor are formed as arcuate portions of cylindrical surfaces and are rotatable, about the cylinder axis, within the reflector thickness, and may be positioned either between the core and the reflector or at the reflector outer surface. The control elements may be in the form of portion of a hollow cylinder movable in an annular space in the reflector, or a complete hollow cylinder with an arcuate portion of the surface incorporating the absorber, or a solid graphite cylinder with the absorber attached to a part of the surface, the cylinder being rotatable about the longitudinal axis. Alternatively, the element may be formed of a curtain of rods suspended side by side from an endless chain.
