Abstract

1,255,882. Fancy yarns. SOC. RHODIACETA. 21 Nov., 1969 [22 Nov., 1968], No. 57228/69. Headings D1F and D1W. A yarn comprises as the sole constituents 1 to 5 thermoplastic continuous filaments of gauge above 5 dtex and having a spiral crimp and/or residual twist torque, each filament having a cross-section which is essentially oval except that one side is concave or substantially flat, and which varies slightly along the length of the filament. The filaments are preferably of polyamide or polyester material. The process for making the yarn comprises the steps of heating a twisted yarn, which has been obtained by giving an initial doubling or assembling twist to two or more synthetic thermoplastic continuous filaments 1 of gauge above 5 dtex, or to two or more yarns 17, 18 each comprising 2-5 such filaments, to a temperature permitting setting and deformation of the filaments without causing individual filaments to stick together, blocking the twist at a definite point i.e. feed rolls 4 or 28, separating the individual filaments or yarns at a point close to where they leave the heating zone, cooling the separated filaments or yarns, and winding them up. The filaments or yarns may be stretched prior to being twisted, and the point of draw may be localised by a snubbing pin 26. The degree of stretch and/or the degree of twist may be varied with time. The separated filaments or yarns may be relaxed with the accompaniment of heat. The apparatus may be arranged such that either a single filament or yarn is supplied from a package by over end yarn feed, or one or more filaments or yarns are supplied from a package 2 by unrolling, or two filaments or yarns are supplied by over end yarn feed in opposite directions as from packages 19, 20. In the case of a single filament or yarn being supplied over end means are also provided for controlling the degree of twist to compensate for the twist imparted by such feed. Such means may comprise a movable spindle having at least two arms arranged symmetrically about the spindle and provided at their free ends with a passage for the yarn, the spindle being provided with means e.g. a magnetic element, for exerting a return torque in opposition to the twist torque. The spindle is driven by a drum from a motor. The separating means preferably comprises a hollow spindle having at its upper end at least one mandrel integral with the internal wall of the spindle and having a free end over which the filaments or yarns are passed. The spindle rotates in a fixed sleeve.
