Pump-actuating mechanism; valves, arrangement of; heat of compression, absorbing; regulating compression.-In an air-compressor comprising. a doubleacting piston containing the crank of a driving crankshaft and a rod connecting the crank to one end of the piston, a single cam-actuated inlet valve and an automatic outlet valve are provided at each end of the cylinder, the inlet valves being held open during compression when the pressure in the reservoir reaches a certain value. As shown, the cylinder is cast in one with a metal base, and provided with removable end covers carrying the inlet and outlet valves b<1>, b<2>, c<1>, c<2>, Fig. 4. The piston comprises heads d<1>, d<2>, connected by a member d of smaller diameter formed with openings d<4>, Fig. 4, and d<5>, Fig. 5, the driving-shaft passes through a bearing e<2> in the opening d<5> and is formed with a crank within the piston connected by a rod f to its head d<2>. The air entering by a port h<1> passes through a space h<2> between the base and its support, and through channels h to the inlet valves. These are disk valves closed by springs and opened at intervals by levers operated through rods k<1>, k<2>, Fig. 6, which are actuated through rollers k<3> on their other ends by a cam l on the shaft e. A second cam m on the same shaft acts on rollers n, the spindles of which move in grooves in a rocking plate o<2> which is acted on by a piston p, subject to the receiver pressure when the latter reaches its maximum, so as to turn the plate into a position where the rollers n are interposed between the rollers k<3> and the cam m. In this position, the inlet valves are held open during the compression strokes except for a slight interval at the end of the stroke which provides for cushioning. When the receiver pressure drops, the plate o<2> is retracted by springs, the air behind the piston being allowed to escape to atmosphere. Cooling is effected by water chambers w, w<1> in the sides and end covers of the cylinder. Lubricating-oil is contained under pressure in a reservoir x above the cylinder, connected with the left-hand compression chamber through a passage 1 provided with a regulating- screw 5 and a non-return valve 2. Passages leading through external glass tubes lead the oil to the ends of the cylinders and to the bearing e<2> of the driving-shaft. Excess oil passing to the bottom of the cylinder is led through a passage 16 to a pump 10, Fig. 6, the piston of which is mounted on the rod k<2>, and forced back to the reservoir. The cover of the reservoir is secured by screw plugs y on one of which a gauge 14 may be provided. The cylinder may be divided, leaving a space in the middle permitting a longer stroke. The ends of the cylinder may be of different dimensions.
