Abstract

1,255,555. Furnace grates. S. A. ALEXANDERSSON. 3 April, 1969 [4 April, 1968], No. 17431/69. Heading F4B. A movable grate, for a furnace or an incinerator, in the form of steps has each step rockable by a drive mechanism to impart a wave-like motion to the material on the grate and has synchronizing means between juxtaposed steps maintaining a predetermined clearance between the adjoining edge portions of those steps. The grate is divided into an upper and lower section, there being a drive mechanism for each section and each section has a different rate of movement. Grate rods 1 of each step are mounted on a shaft 2 by means of arms 7 and leaf springs 10 allowing some relative movement. An adjustable link 16 connects arms 15 on one pair of shafts 2 on the upper section and an identical link connects the arms on a pair of shafts on the lower section, this allows a controllable gap A between the curved ends of the rods 1 to admit air to the grate. In one form of drive mechanism a link 8 rocks alternate steps in the same direction, the link being driven by a speed controllable electric motor or by an hydraulic assembly. Other drive mechanisms - comprise arms on each shaft engaging arms on the next adjacent shafts with springs therebetween, or gear segments on each shaft engaging one another or a system of pivoted links including a pair of links converging at a point and means following a curved path and imparting the required motion to the grate shafts 2. A special step (Fig. 6, not shown) is provided between the upper and lower sections and comprises one half step connected to the drive of the upper section and a second half connected to the drive of the lower section.
