Abstract

1,255,429. Diphenyl ethers. ISHIHARA SANGYO KAISHA Ltd. 14 Oct., 1970 [14 Oct., 1969; 22 April, 1970; 6 May, 1970 (2); 5 June, 1970], No. 48924/70. Heading C2C. The invention relates to diphenyl ethers of the general formula wherein X represents a halogen atom or a methyl radical in the 2-position; Y represents a halogen atom or an alkyl radical having up to 3 carbon atoms in the 4-position; Z represents hydrogen or halogen in 5 and 6 positions, wherein both the 5 and 6 positions may be hydrogen but only one of the 5 or 6 positions may be halogen; and R represents a saturated or an unsaturated hydrocarbon having up to 3 carbon atoms, methoxyethyl radical or an ethoxyethyl radical. The compounds may be prepared by reacting 2,4-dihalonitrobenzene of the general formula in which Hal is a halogen atom, with a substituted phenol of the general formula to produce a 2,4-bis (substituted phenoxy) nitrobenzene, reacting an alcohol of the formula ROH to produce the diphenyl ether (Formula I) and the substituted phenol (Formula III), and thereafter isolating the diphenyl ether of Formula I. The compounds have herbicidal properties and may be used in the usual forms and other herbicidal compounds, insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers or soils may be incorporated.
