Abstract

1,255,394. Oil pollution. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 10 Feb., 1969 [4 April, 1968], No. 7043/69. Heading C1C. Oil pollution is prevented or countered by contacting the oil-water mixture with a dispersant system containing a compound of general formula selected from and their mixtures, wherein Y is a sorbitan radical, R is a monovalent alkane or alkenyl radical having from 8 to 20 carbon atoms; and R<SP>1</SP> is a radical having the general formula wherein n is from 6 to 30 and m is from 5 to 14. Preferably, the dispersant system exhibits a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance number of about 14À0. The sorbitan monoacylates of the dispersant system may be one of, or a mixture of, three acylates which have themselves been prepared by the esterification of the three (specified) compounds resulting from the dehydration of sorbitol. The dispersant system may be employed in conjunction with a solvent such as water, C 2 -C 10 . alcohols, and aromatic hydrocarbons. Normally, 1 to 10 parts of the total dispersant system is employed per 100 parts by weight of oil. The dispersant may be sprayed onto the oil directly although agitation is preferred.
