Abstract
1303450 Oil dispersants ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 31 March 1970 [27 May 1969] 15186/70 Addition to 1255394 Heading B1V [Also in Division C1] A stable oil-water dispersion is formed by contacting an oil-water mixture composed of a major amount of water and a minor amount of oil with a dispersant system containing at least one of general formula compound selected from and their mixtures, wherein Y is a sorbitan radical R is a monovalent alkyl or alkenyl radical having from 8 to 20 carbon atoms, and R<SP>1</SP> is a radical having the general formula herein 'n' is from 6 to 30 and 'm' is from 5 to 14 and the dispersant exhibits a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance number (HLB) of 6 to 8. The sorbitan monoacylates of the dispersant system may be one of or a mixture of three acylates which have themselves been prepared by the esterification of three (specified) compounds resulting from the dehydration of sorbitol. The system may be employed in conjunction with a solvent such as iso- or cyclo-paraffinic hydrocarbons. Normally 1 to 10 parts of the total dispersant system are employed per 100 parts by weight of oil. The dispersant may be sprayed onto the oil preferably with subsequent agitation.
