Class 85 A drilling mud comprises water, clay, defoamant, and a water-soluble, non-ionic compound characterized by the formula R-(X-[(CH 2 -CH 2 -O] n -H] m ) y where in R is a hydrophobic group containing at least four carbon atoms, X is a structural element selected from the group consisting of O S // // -O-, -S-, -C -O-, -C -S-, O S O // // // -C -S-, -C -O-, -C -N<, O // and -C -NH-, n is a whole number, m is a whole number one less than the valency of the structural element X, y is a whole number, and the product of n, m, and y is at least 10. The non-ionic compound decreases the yield point, viscosity and gel strength of the mud and minimizes the effect of heat and increase in clay concentration on these properties. The properties are lower when the clay is added to water containing the non-ionic compound than when the non-ionic compound is added to a clay and water mixture. Any defoamant may be used but a preferred defoamant is a predominantly hydrophobic, non-ionic compound characterized by the formulae R<SP>1</SP>-(X-[(CH 2 -CH 2 -O)k-H]m)y wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrophobic group containing at least twelve carbon atoms, k is a whole number, and the product of k, m and y is not greater than 3. Where oil is used as the defoamant it emulsifies with the water to form an emulsion drilling mud. The yield point, viscosity and gel strength of the mud are reduced by the addition of a water-soluble inorganic salt to the mud. The salt may be supplied by employing sea water as all or part of the aqueous phase of the mud. Where salt is present in the mud a water loss reducing agent is added. A drilling mud according to the invention containing sodium form clay may be converted to a calcium type mud by the addition of a water-soluble calcium compound, and a drilling mud according to the invention of the calcium type may be converted to a sodium type by the addition of a sodium compound.
