In the determination of hydroperoxides, of substances which react with the liberation of hydroperoxides, of peroxidase or of peroxidate active substances using the reaction of the hydroperoxides with a chromogen, which reaction is catalysed by peroxidase or peroxidate active substances, the chromogen used has the general formula: in which R 1 is a lower alkyl radical, R 2 is a hydrogen atom, a sulphonic acid group or an alkali metal or ammonium sulphonate group, R3<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a lower alkyl radical, Y is a nitrogen atom or a methine group which together with R 3 <SP>1</SP> can form a benzene ring substituted by R 2 , one of the substituents X<SP>1</SP> is a sulphur atom, a vinyradical, an imino group, which can be substituted by a lower alkyl or an aryl radical, an oxygen atom or a carbon atom substituted by two lower alkyl radicals, while the other substituent X<SP>1</SP> is an oxygen atom or a carbon atom substituted by two lower alkyl radicals. The chromogen may be mixed with a modifier of general formula: in which Ar is a benzene or naphthalene nucleus V is hydroxyl or amino, V<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or hydroxyl or amino, which may be alkylated or arylated, W is an amino, carboxyl, or sulphonic acid group or an alkyl, alkoxy, or aryl radical, W<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or an amino group or a carboxyl or sulphonic acid group in free form or as an ammonium or alkali metal salt, or an alkyl, alkoxy or aryl radical. Diagnostic agents comprise peroxidase or a peroxidate active substance and a chromogen (for determination of hydroperoxides or substances reacting to give hydroperoxides); hydrogen peroxide or a substance forming hydrogen peroxide and a chromogen (for determination of haemoglobin or of other peroxidate active substances). The agents may be in the form of solutions or test papers or in films on foil.
