The velocity, carbon content and temperature of the exhaust gases are determined at a location upstream of that where CO is burnt to CO 2 , all of these factors being obtained by physical measurements only; from them the rate of decarburization is calculated, and refining conditions so controlled that the decarburization rate follows a predetermined course. Preferably the gas velocity is obtained by timing the passage of an acoustic wave through the stream, while carbon content is determined from measurements of the intensity of thermal radiation emitted by the gases in particular wavelength ranges, or from measurements of the absorption of electromagnetic radiation by the gases. The gas temperature may be obtained from the frequency of a stationary acoustic wave set up in a guide of given length positioned in the gas stream. The theoretical bases for the determinations are given.
