Abstract

1,252,416. Anti-theft devices. LOWE & FLETCHER Ltd. 25 April, 1969 [20 April, 1968; 28 Sept., 1968], Nos. 18771/68 and 46190/68. Heading B7J. [Also in Division E2] In a steering-column lock, the barrel 18 of the lock is rotatably movable to move the columnengaging bolt 8, and axially movable to move a bolt-retaining element 12 to release the bolt for engagement with the column. A spindle 11, connected to the lock-barrel drives control switches 4 and also a cam 11 which engages the bolt 8 to lift it against spring 9. The axially slidable retaining element 12 is biased towards the bolt by spring 25a and it has a projecting rib 12b which can enter a slot 25 (see Figs. 3 and 5) in the bolt when this is raised, Figs. 4 and 6. The bolt 12 has a slot 27 engaged, when the column is locked, by the larger diameter part 22b of a stop-cam 22 carried on the barrel, Figs. 3 and 5. Rotation of the cam when the key is inserted to free the vehicle steering, withdraws the shoulder 22d of the stop cam from the slot 27 in the retaining element to allow this to move towards the bolt. When, on further rotation of the barrel, the bolt is raised so that its slot 25 becomes aligned with the rib 12b on the retaining element, this moves forward to hold the bolt in its retracted position. Further rotation operates the switch unit 4. To lock the column, the key is turned in the reverse direction to cause the shoulder 22 of the stop cam to abut the retaining element, and is pressed to cause the barrel 18 to slide axially in its housing so that the cam is aligned with the slot 27 (as shown in broken lines in Fig. 4). This allows further rotation of the barrel to cause the cam to engage the slot. When the key is fully turned (stops, not shown, being provided) it may be withdrawn and the barrel coupled to the retaining element 12 retracted, to free the bolt 8 for engagement under its own spring. In the modification shown in Figs. 8 and 9, axial movement of the barrel 28 is prevented until the key is inserted by a blocking member 41 lying in the top slot 31 engaged by the tumblers. This member has pips 42 which engage holes 43 in the lock housing 29 to prevent axial movement when pressed radially outwards by the tumblers. In a further modification, Fig. 10, axial movement of the barrel in the locked and keyless condition is prevented by a radial peg (58) engaging fixed surfaces 64, 65 projecting inwardly from the lock housing. When the peg is moved from angular position 58a to position 58b it may pass axially through gap (66) between these surfaces in plate 60.
