1352799 Steering column locks HANS KOLB KG 27 Oct 1972 49544/72 Heading B7J [Also in Division E2] A steering column lock having a bolt which is spring urged into a locking position and retained in a disengaging position until removal of a key from a cylinder lock of which a barrel is rotatable to retract the bolt into the disengaging position and then to actuate a starter switch and is also axially displaceable to release the bolt and allow the bolt to move into the locking position on removal of the key, the barrel being axially spring loaded in the direction of removal of the key and being provided with at least one control member 11 which is movable radially with respect to a barrel housing 3 and is engaged by the key and engages with a respective control surface 13 of the housing to control the axial displacement of the barrel on removal and ininsertion of the key in which at least one pin 6 is provided, axially displaceable in the housing and transmitting the thrust from the or each spring 4 that axially loads the barrel by abutting the barrel when the barrel is in its locking posiposition, and the barrel abuts the or each pin through a cam face 8 shaped so that, while the barrel is being turned from a drive position to actuate the starter switch and when it is returned to the drive position by a return spring, the pin or each pin abuts the housing instead of the barrel so that the barrel is relieved of the loading of the or each axially acting spring. As shown in Fig. 2, the key is inserted into the lock to move the barrel axially, the barrel being retained by the control member 11 abutting surface 13 of the housing against the action of the springs 4. When the key is turned through 90 degrees, Fig. 3, the barrel turns to the drive position and the bolt is retracted, the cam face 8 allows the pins 6 to be displaced under the action of the springs. The pins engage the housing 3 instead of the cam face thereby relieving the barrel of the load of the springs, thereby ensuring that the barrel is easily returnable from the starting position to the drive position by its return spring. The control member instead of engaging one edge of the key may engage a flat surface. There may be two control members. The barrel may have an end projection 15 which fits into a notch in the housing whereby the barrel may only be turned after the barrel has been moved axially. The control member can also function as a tumbler of the lock.
