Abstract
1,252,351. Centrifugal compressors; turbines. F. BOURQUARD. Feb.20, 1969 [July 9, 1968], No.9298/69. Headings F1C and F1T. In a aerodynamic or hydrodynamic machine such as a compressor, turbine or the like comprising blades or vanes mounted so as to rotate about an axis and integral or rigid with at least one of two side plates limiting the fluid stream laterally the side plate or plates with which the blades are integral or rigid is or are provided with recessed and protruding portions serving to vary, at a constant radial distance from the axis of rotation, the spacing between the side plates along the angular extent of the space between each blade or vane and the next and to equalize the mass rate of flow of fluid in each channel by uniformly distributing it over the angular extent. The invention is described as applied to a centrifugal compressor comprising impeller blades 21, Figs. 6, 7a, 7b, 7c and 7d, extending between front and rear shrouds 22, 23; Figs.7a, 7b, 7c and 7d being developed sections at the respective radii R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 in Fig. 6. Between the radii R 1 and R 2 , the shrouds 22, 23 change from the smooth contour shown in Fig.7a to the saw-tooth contour shown in Figs.7b and 7c. If intermediate short blades 26 are provided, each saw-tooth splits into two saw-teeth between the radii R 3 and R 4 , as shown in Fig. 7d. These two saw-teeth may be different from one another, whereby channel 37 may be wider than channel 38. Between radii R 4 and R 5 , the contour changes back to a smooth form. The saw-tooth contour provides a greater width of inter-blade flow passage adjacent the pressure sides 24 of the blades then adjacent the suction sides 25. This renders the mass flow constant along the circumferential extent of each flow passage, whereby noise and pulsations are reduced and efficiency is increased. As shown, each shroud 22, 23 may be made in two parts 22a, 22b or 23a, 23 b, only the parts 22 b, 23b being machined to provide the required contour. At least some of the blades may be integral with at least one of the shrouds.
