Foundry sand from a mixer 1 is fed via a lump breaker 4 to a trough 3 and a box 11 over an endless belt 15 and is conveyed by the belt between walls 81, 82. A stripper 83 smooths off the top of the sand which then passes beneath a pivoted roller 19 which penetrates more or less deeply into the sand according to the water content of the sand. An arm 67 attached to the roller moves arcuately between electrical contacts 32-36 and operates one of a series of water valves 75-79 to adjust the water supply to the mixer 1. In Figs. 1-3 (not shown) the sand is fed into cylinders which are scraped off and then compacted by pistons, the depth or movement of the piston in each cylinder being arranged to raise or lower a bar (58) moving over electrical contacts (27-31) and operating water valves feeding the mixer as before.
