Abstract

1,251,877. Polybromo- and polybromochlorobiphenyl diamines. UGINE KUHLMANN. 25 Sept., 1969 [30 Sept., 1968], No. 47279/69. Heading C2C. The invention comprises compounds of the formula where R is the biphenyl radical substituted by more than four atoms of bromine or of bromine and chlorine, R 1 Z and R 2 Z each represents either a hydrogen atom or R 1 and R 2 each represents a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic, cyclic, heterocyclic or aromatic radical and Z represents either a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl, amino, carboxyl or chloro radical. They are prepared by reacting a polybromo or polybromochloro biphenyl with the appropriate amine under strong stirring. Examples describe the reaction between decabromo biphenyl and monoethanolamine, 4,41-diaminodiphenylmethane and benzylamine and between a polybromo polychlorobiphenyl and monoethanolamine. The compounds may be used as curing agents for epoxy resins and are uninflammable and self-extinguishing.
