1377303 Ampholytic fluoroaliphatic compounds MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 14 Jan 1972 [18 Jan 1971 9 Sept 1971] 1972/72 Headings C2C and C2P [Also in Division A5] Novel ampholytic fluoroaliphatic surfactants which contain in a single molecule at least one terminal fluoroaliphatic group, at least one terminal quaternary ammonium radical and at least one terminal anionogenic radical or salts thereof and particularly compounds having the general formula in which R<SP>f</SP> represents a fluoroaliphatic group containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, Z represents an organic linking group, the three R groups each represent like or different unsubstituted alkyl or aralkyl groups containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms or alkyl or aralkyl groups containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms substituted by water-solubilizing groups, or in combination with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached the three R groups represent a heterocyclic group in combination with no more than one lower alkyl group, and A# represents the ion of an acid AH having an ionization constant in water at 25 C. of at least 1 Î 10<SP>-6</SP>, e.g. -COO-, -SO 3 -, -OSO 3 -, -PO(OH)O-, -OPO(OH)O- and -PO(Oalk)O-, are made by a variety of known methods. R<SP>f </SP>may contain not more than one H or Cl atom for every two carbons and must be terminated by CF 3 . The products are used in forming fire-fighting foams and for oleophobic coatings. C 8 F 17 SO 2 N#(CH 2 ) 3 N#(CH 3 ) 3 and C 6 F 13 SO 2 N#(CH 2 ) 3 N#(CH 3 ) 3 are prepared by the action of NaOMe on C 8 F 17 SO 2 NH(CH 2 ) 3 N#(CH 3 ) 3 Cl# and C 6 F 13 SO 2 NH(CH 2 ) 3 N#(CH 3 ) 3 Cl# respectively, and C 6 F 13 SO 2 N#C 3 H 6 N#(CH 3 ) 2 CH 2 CH 2 OH and C 6 F 13 SO 2 N#C 3 H 6 N#(CH 3 ) 2 (CH 2 CH 2 O) 2 H by the action of ethylene oxide on C 6 F 13 SO 2 NHC 3 H 6 N(CH 3 ) 2 .
