A bolt has a tension indicating device comprising a member 5 attached at one end to the bolt shank and an indicator rod 9 secured to the other end of the member, a change in length of the bolt shank when the bolt is tensioned resulting in a corresponding movement of the rod relative to the top surface of the bolt head 1. As shown, the member 5 is a cylindrical sheet metal sleeve attached by a soldered connection 6 to the bolt shank. The member 5 terminates in a narrow blade 7 to which the rod 9 is attached, the blade passing through a longitudinal hole 8 in the periphery of the bolt head. The member 5 surrounds an extension 3 of the threaded portion 4 of the bolt. With the bolt untensioned the top surfaces of the bolt head and the rod 9 are coplanar but when the bolt is tensioned, the distance that the top surface of the rod lies below the top surface of the bolt head indicates the tension in the bolt. In a modification the connection 6 may be formed by rolling the member 5 in a groove and the circumference of the member 5 may be reduced to be equal to or less than the width of the blade 7. The hole 8 may be inclined at an angle α to the bolt axis.
