Abstract
1,251,645. Pipe couplings. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 5 Feb., 1969 [7 Feb., 1968], No. 6172/68. Heading F2G. A coupling for coaxial pipes 11a, 12a comprises, flanges 11, 12 having parallel front faces 11b, 12b and rear faces 11d, 12d, backing rings 21, 22, and a pair of diametrically opposed shells 15, 16 having co-operating recesess, defined by planar surfaces 19, 20 and part cylindrical surfaces 18, and means, such as studs and nuts 15a, 15b, for clamping the shells together to enclose the flanges and backing rings. The latter have flat front faces for cooperating abutment with the rear faces 11d, 12d of the flanges and dihedral rear faces for cooperating abutment with the complementarily inclined planar faces 19, 20 of the shell recesses; on clamping the shells together the dihedral faces of the backing rings and surfaces 19, 20 react to urge the front faces 11b, 12b together. As shown, a gasket 13 is disposed between the flanges which are surrounded by an aligning sleeve 14. The rings 21, 22 may be in two parts to facilitate assembly on the pipes, and the shells may have cooling fluid ducts therein.
