To promote the flow of material from a hopper 10, a support plate 14 with a central orifice 15 is vibrated at, or in the region of, one of its resonant modes of vibration by a vibrator 18. A conical baffle 16 in the hopper may also be vibrated in the same way as the plate 14. Means may be provided to automatically alter the frequency of vibration as the volume of material in the hopper changes.
