Abstract

[Also in Divisions B2 and D1] A bituminous sheet or membrane is reinforced with a fleece of polyethylene terephthalate fibres or filaments. The term " fleece " includes tissues and mats. One or more fleeces may be present and the fleece(s) may or may not be disposed symmetrically about the midpoint of the sheet. The material may be made by drawing the fleece through an impregnating bath of molten bitumen, squeezing out excess bitumen and either dusting with finely-divided talc or coating with further bitumen. A sheet containing two fleeces may be made by pressing together two impregnated fleeces between rollers whilst the bitumen impregnant is still tacky. Alternatively, a fleece may be coated on one or both sides with bitumen without prior impregnation. The impregnating bitumen may be different from that forming the outer surfaces of the sheet. The fleece may be made of randomly and/or regularly oriented fibres or continuous filaments. The bitumen may be derived from coal tar or petroleum or may be native, oxidized or blown, and may be mixed with fillers or thermoplastic resins (examples being given).
