Abstract

1,251,435. Automatic analysis. F. HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO. A.G. 22 Jan., 1969 [24 Jan., 1968], No. 3688/69. Heading B1X. [Also in Division G1] Automatic apparatus for the transfer of a predetermined quantity of a liquid sample or of an upper liquid phase of a sample having a sedimented lower phase from one container 1 to another container 18 comprises a first tube 6 through which the liquid sample or phase is transferred, a second tube 7 connectible through 19 to a source of gas under pressure, tubes 6, and 7 being secured to a common support 5 which is movable rectilinearly to cause one end of each of tubes 6 and 7 to penetrate into container 1, the relative lengths of tubes 6 and 7 being such that the portion of tube 6 penetrating into the container is longer than that of tube 7, means 11, 12 for detecting the arrival of the liquid sample or phase at a predetermined location in tube 6, means 17 for effecting rectilinear movement of support 5 in response to signals from means 11, 12 and from element 13 for detecting contact between the end of tube 7 and the surface of the liquid sample or phase. Tubes 6, 7 may be of electrically conducting material when element 13 measures electrical conductivity. In operation, a start signal 21 to control unit 16 initiates downward movement of support 5 so that needles 6, 7 penetrate perforatable plugs 15, 14 in container 1. Movement of support 5 ceases when needle 7 touches the surface of the liquid. Air or gas pressure through tube 7 forces the sample into tube 6 until it reaches electrical conductivity or photoelectric gauge 11, when a signal causes support 5 to raise the tubes so that tube 6 emerges from the liquid, the sample meanwhile being forced by gas pressure into container 18. Another signal from 20 makes holder 5 lift the tubes out of container 1. If photocell 9 which is carried by support 5, is not actuated by lamp 22 throughout descent of the needles, i.e. if the needles reach the level of sediment 4 in container 1, a signal from element 10 makes support 5 raise the needles again and may operate a light signal for the operator. Containers 1 may form a continuous automatically moveable linear chain, or the containers may be chambers formed in film.
