Abstract
125,098. Smith, J. G. May 12, 1916. Drawings to Specification. Submarines, systems for damaging and destroying.-Consists in a method of attacking submarines and other submerged objects and comprises the use in succession of (1) a shell adapted to produce an upheaval or other disturbance in the surface of the water in front of the submerged object, and (2) an armour-piercing or other ordinary shell timed to enter the water at the point of disturbance before the water has returned to the normal condition. Deflection of the ordinary shell from its normal trajectory on entering the water is thus prevented. The two projectiles may be fired from a gun having two barrels or from separate guns fired with a measured interval between the shots; or the desired interval between the arrival of the shells may be obtained by discharging both together, using different propellant charges or using a leading or special shell which is lighter than the -other.
