Abstract
1,250,943. Flame analyser apparatus. J. U. WHITE. 6 Oct., 1969 [9 Oct., 1968], No. 49077/69. Heading F4T. [Also in Division G1] In an apparatus for analysis of a sample by flame spectrometry, the sample, contained in a funnel-shaped container 10, is atomized by pressurized air at the nozzle 52, and is burnt as a mixture with fuel gas at the burner head 16. Fuel gas is supplied from a mains supply 25 via a pressure regulator 26 (Fig. 1) to the inlet nipple 45. Compressed air is fed in to the burner through nipple 41, a portion of the air flowing to the atomizing nozzle, the remainder mixing with the fuel gas in the Venturi passage 39 (Fig. 2). In a different embodiment (Fig. 1) the gas and air may be mixed in a Venturi 30, external of the burner body. The mixture of fuel, air, and atomized sample flows up the burner barrel 14 to an inner grid 67 which smooths the flow of the mixture to the upper grid 68 where the mixture burns. A chimney 69 surrounds the flame, a supply of air being introduced through conduit 72 to prevent the deposit of residues on the chimney. The barrel 14 contains a baffle 60 and a tubular screen 57, which together deflect droplets of unatomized sample to the drain outlet 62. The detection system includes a lens 75, Fig. 1, a filter 76, and a second lens 77, the light from a selected part of the flame passing through these to a photo-cell 78, which may be an ironselenium cell or a silicon photo diode. The electrical energy from the photo-cell controls an electrical detector such as a galvanometer 80.
