Abstract
1495491 Recyling combustion gases P FASCIONE 6 Feb 1976 [12 Feb 1975 15 Dec 1975] 04796/76 Heading F4T [Also in Division B1] Combustion apparatus comprises a mixing enclosure 16 having inlets 15, 17 communicating respectively with a duct 13 supplying recycled combustion gases and with the atmosphere, means for regulating the aperture of both of the inlets, and an outlet 18 connected to the inlet to a fan (9), Fig. 2 (not shown) whose outlet communicates with a supply passage (2) coaxial with a fuel injection nozzle (1), Fig. 1 (not shown) and provided with swirl vanes (7). The combustion gases entering the inlet 15 pass through an annular space 19 between the walls 20 and 23 and mix with the air stream from the inlet 17 after passing through a perforated divergent tubular wall 22, integral with an annular member 21 which is movable axially by means of the engagement of a projection 24 in a helical groove (25) to vary the gap between it and the wall 20 and so control the gas flow. The air flow is regulated by axial movement of a conical member 26. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, combustion gases enter inlet 43 of mixer 42 and pass through a perforated cylinder 52 into the air stream which enters inlets 44 and flows around helical baffle 53; the air and gas flows are regulated by axial movement of collar 49 and plate 45. In this embodiment the fan 37 is coaxial with wirl vanes 35 and nozzle holder 36. In a variant of the first embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), part of the mixture of combustion gases and air is directed to an annular space (70) defined around nozzle (64) by a collar (71) which may terminate in a frusto-conical deflector (71a) and may carry external vanes (71b) projecting into the mains gas mixture flow. A process for operating the apparatus under conditions which produce toroidal vertical flow in the combustion chamber is described and claimed.
