Abstract

A rear view mirror carrier comprises a base with an upstanding web 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, a truncated paraboloidal housing 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, secured to the base at its smaller end, a mount 4 for a mirror element located at an opening at the larger end of the housing and a tie rod 5 extending from the housing interior through the mount to terminate in a disc 6 so that the mount may be adjustably and releasably secured on the housing by its simultaneous engagement with the disc and housing on opposite sides, and is characterized in that the smaller end of the focusing and the web 1<SP>1</SP> merge in a smooth substantially unbroken curve in a plane passing through the rotational axis of the housing and the tie rod is adjustable by means accessible externally of the carrier but not projecting from the carrier outwardly of said curve. In the embodiment shown, a capstan nut or washer 11 with radial spanner slots 14 is non-rotatably secured to one end of the rod 5 by a polygonal collar 12, and the other end of the rod and a flange 9 on the disc 6 are screw threaded together. In modifications, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the disc 6 is fixed to, or only rotatable on, the rod 5 and the other end of the rod is threaded in a nut integral with the washer 11. In another embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the rod and disc are integral and the other end of the rod is threaded in a nut (15<SP>1</SP>) which is pivotably secured by a transverse pin to one end of a lever, the other end of the lever extending downwards into a passage in the base portion 1 and being pivotably secured therein by a nut and bolt. After pivoting the lever sufficiently to secure the mount 4, the bolt by a hexagonal key is tightened to hold the lever by frictional engagement with the sides of the base passage. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the rod is threaded to engage a collar on an arm, the other end of the arm having a second parallel collar, internally threaded to be engaged by an adjusting screw which passes through the base and has its head flush with the base. The tie rod may be of resilient plastics material, and the focusing and base may form an integral unit.
