Abstract
1,250,639. Moulding thermoplastics corrugated tubing. WAVIN N.V. 30 Dec., 1968 [21 Oct., 1968], No. 61678/68. Heading B5A. In the manufacture of transversely corrugated thermoplastics tubing using a combined extrusion and double-belt moulding machine, the tubing 26 is forced into contact with the grooves 8 of co-operating mould halves 7, 7a by means of an inflation jacket 10, e.g. of heatresistant silicon rubber, attached to a longitudinally movable conduit 13. Extrusion head 1 is provided with a mandrel 2 having a heated extension 29 which slidably houses conduit 13 within a bore 5. The upstream end of the conduit is connected to a compressor 17 and vacuum pump 18 via a flexible hose 19, and in operation a switch 22 is actuated by a weight 20 attached to hose 19 to operate compressor 17, expand jacket 10 and force tube 26 into contact with the moving moulds 7, 7a. Jacket 10 and conduit 13 move with the moulds until weight 20 actuates a switch 21 which operates vacuum pump 18 to cause deflation of jacket 10. Conduit 13 is retracted by weight 20 which falls until switch 22 is actuated thereby; thereafter the cycle is repeated. Jacket 10 may be provided with projections 24 which co-operate with grooves 25 in the mould halves to form apertures in the tubing. The mould halves may be heated where they first encounter the tube and are cooled downstream thereof. Materials mentioned are polyethylene and P.V.C.
